Audemars Piguet, the ultra luxury watch brand synonymous with quality, complexity and desirability. Recognized as one of the top three horological brands in the world, its respect garnered is a result of over 140 years of hardwork and dedication to horological perfection. It’s boldness to differentiate itself, even in times of global financial uncertainty, has time and time again created innovative timepieces that revolutionalized horology, proving itself to be a cut above the rest. And it all started with a friendship forged by a passion and love of horological movements. Here are 4 interesting facts about Audemars Piguet and their horological achievements, which culminated in the creation of the Jules Audemars collection.

A surprisingly successful experiment

The story starts in 1873, when technology student Jules Louis Audemars meets economy student Edward Auguste Piguet. The opening of their watch factory in Switzerland in 1875 was nothing more than an experiment; when surprisingly it turned out to be a great success. The watches Audemars Piguet manufactured stood out because of their precision work and high quality. And that is exactly why these watches stand out today. To own a Audemars Piguet is to own a fine, mechanical timepiece made with great craftsmanship and finished to perfection.

Through the years Audemars Piguet surprised the world several times with innovative designs. In 1925 they produced worlds thinnest pocket watch, followed three years later by the first ever skeleton watch: a watch that shows its mechanical secrets through a looking glass. Audemars Piguet has had a great reputation right from the start, but it was in 1972 they grew to be one of the most successful watch brands in the world when they introduced the “Royal Oak”. A luxury sport watch with a radical, modern design: unique in a conservative branch such as watchmaking.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch has attained near-mythic status in the 40-plus years since it first sprang from the creative mind of designer Gérald Genta. In this time, it has saved a company from bankruptcy, established an entirely new genre of wristwatch, and graced the wrists of everyone from royalty to rap stars. And yet in spite of all this, it remains controversial, a polarizing design with as many people singing its praises as not. Indeed, for every die-hard fan of the Royal Oak, you’ll find someone else who can hardly stand its sight.

Audemars Piguet-banner has continued on their development path and in 2000, while celebrating their 125th anniversary, their first model with Equation of time, sunrise, sunset and perpetual calendar was released.  To this day, Audemars Piguet watches are still meticulously handcrafted and designed by watchmakers.  Every edge is hand beveled and the sides are retouched again by hand to eliminate any trace of imperfection.
